Newquay Zoo is celebrating their continued conservation success with the birth of an endangered crowned lemur. Lakobe a male crowned lemur was born at the Zoo on the 30th June and is enjoying hanging out with his mum and dad in the Madagascan Walkthrough at the Zoo. Visitors are able to catch a glimpse of Lakobe as he clings to mum while she leaps around their rainforest enclosure.
Crowned lemurs (Latin name: Eulemur coronatus) are classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species and are only found in the extreme north of the island of Madagascar where numbers are in rapid decline. The biggest threat to their survival in the wild is habitat loss due to slash-and-burn agriculture, charcoal production, mining for sapphires and gold, and illegal logging. The species is also hunted for food, and captured for the local pet trade.
