Lemur eating millipede

A short video of rare lemur behavior I shot in Ranomafana National Park in 2009. The lemur above is Eulemur rubriventer, (red-bellied lemurs). This behavior has also been observed in red-ruffed lemurs and black lemurs. It is believed that the lemurs anoint themselves with a cyanide-like substance secreted by the millipedes in an effort to rid themselves of ectoparasites. This video was filmed just after an aggressive encounter with a different lemur species.
